Previous Harper’s Bazaar and Condé Nast Traveller fashion editor Florrie Thomas has the very definition of distinctive style – you can clock it a mile off. Rather than chase ephemeral trends, she dresses and styles to the beat of her (alluringly bohemian) drum, foraging through legions of designers and independent fashion/jewellery/beauty/interior brands for treasure. From snaps taken outside shows at Milan Fashion week to the more candid shots at home with her two adorable children, Florrie’s outfits and interiors are all unmistakably hers – a haute bohemia with touch of girl-next-door and a dash of cottagecore.
I asked Florrie for the brands she’s loving at the moment… I’m at the ‘in your basket’ stage for most following a speedy edit. Even if you’re not elevated boheme inclined, there are independent brands here seriously worth knowing about. Enjoy!
‘Having previously worked as a fashion editor at Harper’s Bazaar and Condé Nast Traveller I had the opportunity and honour to spend time editing and styling (plus a lot of steaming and packing!) many beautiful pieces of clothing. And, while these brands, and clothes, still excite me endlessly, as I’ve grown up, had children and started to build a home I find myself equally as exhilarated by a wide array of lovely things from beautiful childrenswear brands to original art for my home. I love discovering new (or new to me) independent brands and buying vintage and second hand. Here are a few of my favourite things…’
Silva hand wash, £35, Reia
‘There are plenty of stylish soap brands on the market, but Reia stands out for me due to the two female founders’ unwavering commitment to sustainability. After refilling the chic green glass container the fully recyclable, pre-addressed pouch can be popped in the postbox, just as it is. Their new scent Silva is also smells completely delicious.’
Paper geranium, £225, Plants For Shade
‘As the name suggests, Plants For Shade’s beautifully handcrafted paper flowers by Georgia Doherty are perfect for those with a tendency to neglect the real deal. Georgia hand marbles paper to craft their delicate leaves and they really are a piece of art for your shady shelf.’
Wall hanging, £900, Deborah Manson via Felt Collections
‘Felt Collections source contemporary art and curate biannual shows. Their particular interest in more tactile pieces (hence their name) means they spotlight ceramics, quilts and wall hangings alongside more traditional paintings. I’ve discovered some amazing artists via their brilliant eye and invested in some affordable original art for my home. I particularly love this wall hanging by Deborah Manson.’
Fish Pendant, £148, Blooming Dreamer
‘Blooming Dreamer is the sort of brand that transports me year-round to where I wish I always was: on a lazy summer holiday somewhere in Greece. Originally making iconic baskets inspired by Jane Birkin the brand now makes beautifully crafted jewellery which, in my opinion, should not be saved just for summer.’
Hoodie, £65, Whatever Sweats
‘Whatever Sweats was founded by creative consultant and ex-Harper’s Bazaar editor Sophie Bloomfield and brings a serious dose of ‘cool’ to kidswear. Super soft and customisable, my daughter Romy has been living in her personalised tracksuit. She just needs a skateboard now.’
Sheepskin lined suede flats
£445, La Monde Beryl
‘As I age, I increasingly feel like dressing a little more ‘grown- up’ and Le Monde Beryl shoes are, for me, that perfect balance of chic but effortless elegance. These sheepskin lined flats are a case in point.’
‘Farrow’ pyjamas, £70, Nights by Wilder
‘I’m sure if you have little ones, you’ll know Nights by Wilder, but I just love their simple-yet-chic pyjamas made from beautiful Indian cotton. They work just as well in the day as they do for bedtime: in the summer, Romy teams the trousers with a swimsuit for beach-chic!’
50’s floor lamp, £450, Vantage living
‘There is truly nothing I love more than an antiques market hunt, in the hope of stumbling on treasure. But for an instant hit, Vantage Living is one of my favourite spots. Katie has a brilliant eye and can also source specific pieces for you.’
